Breaking the Frame: Olafur Eliasson’s Art, Merleau-Ponty’s Phenomenology, and the Rhetoric of Eco-Activism

This paper, published online in A&E Papers, explores the ways in which Merleau-Ponty's philosophy, translated in the practice of Olafur Eliasson, might re-invigorate and strengthen the politics of environmental activist groups like Greenpeace.  Specifically, I consider Olafur Eliasson's "Notion Motion," a large-scale immersive installation involving a screen of rippling water, and the Greenpeace protest at Brent Spar in the North Sea as a case study for eco-activist politics.  Please click on the title above for the whole article.
